Hello there!

Tracy Thanh Trần is a graphic designer and illustrator based in California. Tracy attended University California of Riverside for her B.A. in Studio Arts, where she explored photographic media, drawing, and painting. She then graduated from California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) for her M.F.A. in Fine Arts, majoring in graphic design.

A Multi-Tool for Internet Activism
GRADUATE STUDIES THESIS

Post Up is a generative and educational tool. It provides a set of creative generators for teenagers (age group between 13-17) that utilizes social media and other digital platforms for the sole purpose of social awareness and internet activism. Internet activism, or online protesting, is a method of making social activism more accessible through digital means like social media, text, and emails, and enables faster and more effective communications. 
Post Up helps teens get their voices heard, and actions are seen. Post Up educates them about what activism looked like in the past and helps them visualize how they can contribute now.

	LEARN
"Learn" is a learning section where teenagers can learn and engage with visual language and protest motifs. Users can hover above words or images to see the relationship. Users can also learn about activism through the years, what that looked like, and learn about the different possibilities for users to achieve their design vision.
	

	CREATIVE GENERATORS
The “Create” Tool allows users to have access to three generators: a poster generator, a social media post generator, and a sticker generator. Users can design their own protest poster for any march or school event, or create digital posts for social media or upload on digital interactive screens, or create iMessage stickers for text campaigns.

	IMESSAGE STICKERS
On Post Up, users can create and use stickers as iMessage stickers or reaction stickers. Post Up iMessage stickers are used to liven up text messages. In order to have access to any Post Up Stickers, you must download the app. When you download the app, any stickers you’ve made will be automatically installed and loaded into your phone.
	

REACTION STICKERS
On Post Up, when you view someone else’s design, instead of comments, you can stick stickers as a form of reaction, to the background of the interface. You can use Post Up stickers, or post your own! User can stick stickers to the background, and it will never interfere with the text or the design. And if it gets too crazy&#38;nbsp;… at the bottom right corner, users can turn the sticker-view off.

MOBILE APPLICATION – UI/UX
CREATE &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;
The creative tool is similar to the site’s “create” function, but it focuses only on digital postings. In the app, there are plenty of design templates so users can quickly change the text, and replace images for a more customized post. Afterward, users have the opportunity to save the design to their phone, email it, text it, or directly post it on social media. 
EXPLORE &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; 
Users can swipe left and right to view designs and have the opportunity to like and share them. Users can filter it by “Popular”, “Nearby” and “What’s New” which allows them to view issues happening around them locally and broadly. 
INTERACTIVE SCREENS &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; 
Post Up utilizes digital screens for their users to get information and content out faster in public spaces like bus shelters and mall displays.
Post Up screens are in selected cities, and users will have an AR experience where the app will scan and determine if the digital display is compatible and bring forth your designs that are compatible with that specific screen (which is based on dimension ratios). And all you have to do is swipe your design up, or stick a sticker to react to an existing post, press confirm on the digital screen, and it’s set! This helps Post Up users to get their voices heard in public spaces interactively and quickly.
LOCATOR &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;
The Locator finds Post Up Screens in your area, and it also locates the location of the designs you have posted up previously.

 “Although we may come from different countries and different cultures, we are united and driven by one hope to find a place to call home.”Mosaic’s philosophy:  Mosaic is a united sanctuary, dedicated for those who seek a new beginning and who’s come from war-ridden countries, or those who have been displaced from their homes due to violence, endangerment, and natural disasters.Mosaic reenvisions a nation of opportunity, and visualize a country that focuses on community growth and sustainability. Mosaic is built off the foundational idea that everyone is committed to an anti-racist life and that relationships can build and grow beyond skin color and acknowledge the contents of their character.


Essentially, Mosaic’s society is culturally diverse, pluralistic, and “super-diverse” (“On Super-Diversity: Reflections 02”, Tariq Ramada). Super-diversity has to do with human diversity but also asserting this diversity as a fundamental positive of our well-being and peaceful future.&#38;nbsp;


The country’s aspirations are to create a sense of belongingness, a place of unity, new opportunities, a new beginning, a safe haven, but also be a place to preserve one’s heritage, culture, and self-identity. Mosaic wants to redefine what it means to be a refugee and remove its negative stigmas. Mosaic’s belief is that all men are created equal and that all of their differences should be celebrated. The diverse nature of the nation is what keeps the country and the people strong and united.

Mosaic is an identity project for a hypothetical nation/country. For this project, I designed an identity, logo, passport, identification card, currency, and a welcome guide booklet.

 The CalArts Poster Archive was initiated in 1995 when faculty members Shelley Stepp and Kary Arimoto-Mercer began collecting posters from the CalArts hallways in order to preserve the designs. In 2016, Michael Worthington took over the project and the archive started making milestones. The goal of the digital archive is to make the poster collection available to the public, and also to crowdsource missing information from alumni and faculty. 

I have personally worked on the Poster Archive project since the summer of 2017, and have been working since. During the summer of 2017, I worked alongside Guanyan Wu (MFA ‘18), as she photographed and I edited the photos taken and then inputting the data into the site. As colleagues, we later became collaborators as we took on the challenge to design the digital interface of the poster archive. I created the branding, and together we designed the interface with the mentorship of Michael Worthington and Roman Jaster. Once we finessed the design, the Yay Brigade design studio (Roman Jaster &#38;amp; Nicole Jaffe) coded the site to make all of our visions possible.&#38;nbsp;

	The CalArts Design Department has a long history of creating posters that linger throughout the hallways of the institute, and so the branding mimics the action of a poster being posted on and/or peeling off the surface of a wall. We wanted something a little expressive, yet simple, so it would not distract from the amazingly wild posters on display.

This was a commission (2016-2017), as well as collaboration from The Furrow design studio. They asked for a single illustration frame for a collaborative animation reel project they were working on to reveal on their site. For this project, an animator from The Furrow, animated my illustration. Here is The Furrow's statement on the project:&#38;nbsp;

"One thing we've grown to love is working with so many of you, and there just are not enough projects in the year to collaborate with everyone. So we decided to create a paid project to do just that. This collaboration has grown to include all types of skillsets and talent from all types of locations. Our goal and hope for the future is that this type of work will continue, whether its application be client based or just for fun. We had a blast putting this on and collaborating with all of you.  Zed the Mammoth is a class assignment to create a container of any kind, for a prehistoric creature that was a local to the Los Angeles area many centuries ago. For this project, I decided to create a toy packaging for a Columbian mammoth figurine. This concept was built off of the La Brea Tar Pit's very own Zed. I imagine Zed being sold at the La Brea Tar Pit's gift shop, where children may purchase Zed and "excavate" him from his container. Within the container, the interior is decorated in bones and tar, allowing children to "save" Zed and bringing him back to life.

	Tragedy &#38;amp; Triumph is a two-part mixtape project that illustrates the legacy of hip-hop, and its ability to tell a story. I was inspired by the idea of mixtapes and CD albums, and how they were a strong source of spreading information, personal interest, personal/political agenda, and be the voice of a group of people. 


Tragedy &#38;amp; Triumph reflects on transformation, and discusses the inner monologue of unpacking life’s battles and confinements that often lead to growth and strength. 
The hip-hop culture at its core is built on values of social justice, peace, respect, self-worth, and community. Urban minorities use hip-hop music and hip-hop culture to use their voice to take artistic control to speak on adversity and circumstances of political and economic oppression. Through hip-hop, it has the possibility to open discourse and dialogue related to issues of the presence of violence (gang violence, police brutality, etc,.), poverty, oppression, confinement, but also resilience. Despite the negative associations that come with rap and hip-hop, many who listen to the music find it as a strong source of community and self-empowerment. Issues of mental health, ways to cope with personal struggle, challenges of understanding identity and personal growth, are often battling with a stigma. Often in urban neighborhoods, the stigma weighs heavy and creates immense pressure. And so, music and dance can establish a sense of storytelling, identity, and community, and allow adults and the youth to become the steward of their own story.

Fight/Flight is a collective of information dedicated to tell a story driven by a single vivid memory which then creates a curcuit of other strands of information and streams of thought. Fight/Flight, draws from the inspiration of the fight-or-flight response that occurs in reaction to a harmful event, attack, or threat to survival. 

In this editorial piece, each selected information, statistic and illustration reveals a piece of the memory as well as bring to light certain social matters such as gang violence, drugs, war, poverty, poor educational system and the negative effects of childhood trauma and trauma, such as anxiety, depression and panic. 

An Editorial Complexity is a project in graduate school that deals with managing, composing and connecting a large amount of information, and treating the information with editorial intentions.
